Things to Do in Settle
Safety in the Hills
Keeping safe when out in the hills of the Yorkshire Dales (or anywhere) is not dependant on how fit you are, or how well you can read a map. It is about the common sense, planning and ensuring you have the appropriate clothing and the correct kit with you every time you set off into the hills.
This is a short one day course, designed by the Yorkshire Dales Guides, to give people confidence and knowledge of personal safety when out walking in the hills. You shall meet your mountain leader at the Yorkshire Dales Guides base. The majority of the course is held outside and led by a local, qualified, mountain leader.
During the day you shall be taught; how to plan and prepare effectively for going into remoter areas, how the weather can affect you and the people walking with you, what appropriate clothing should be worn and what essential equipment should be taken in your rucksack.
Your mountain leader shall also talk you through simple procedures for unforeseen incidents e.g. medical alerts or small accidents, discuss who and how to call for assistance. There shall also be some time spent looking at scenarios of real incidents dealt with by the mountain rescue team and how you can learn from them.
During the course you will learn about:
• how plan and prepare effectively for going into remoter areas
• how the weather can affect you and the people walking with you
