Getting Started with Navigation
This one day navigation course, designed by the Yorkshire Dales Guides, is perfect for people who want to learn the basic navigation skills required to get you from A to B when you are out and about on the hills in the Yorkshire Dales (or anywhere for that matter).
Throughout the day your local, qualified, mountain leader will teach you the basics map reading skills and how to use a compass. You shall be shown how to orientate yourself using just a compass and use these skills to plan a walk taking into consideration safety on the hills.
Your day shall begin at the Yorkshire Dales Guides base in Hornby Laithe or the Clapham Reading Room*. From here the course takes place on the surrounding rolling dales and moorland of Ribblesdale. Your guide is local and has great knowledge of the area should you want to know more about the environment the course takes place in.
During the course you will learn about:
• basic map skills; how to use a map - symbols, scales etc
• compass orientation
• planning a safe walk using a map and compass
• safety on hills
